BEN STREET COTTAGE

This charming guest cottage is a continuation of the McDaniel Residence, inspired by my love of Charleston’s historic, eclectic style and the homeowners’ love of international travel. Although it was new construction, we wanted the cottage to feel warm, welcoming, and collected rather than brand new. New furnishings were layered with cherished family heirlooms, personal belongings, art, and pieces gathered during years of travel to create a comfortable retreat for visiting family and friends.

The clients’ collection became an important part of the design. In the custom kitchen, hand-painted blue and white platters were displayed as art above the sink alongside a cobalt glass pedestal bowl, pottery, and other collected pieces. We pulled colors from the pottery and paired them with a wood Parisian bistro-style table and cross-back chairs in the breakfast nook. Contemporary and modern art was incorporated throughout the cottage as well, including a large abstract canvas in the living area and vibrant floral paintings in the primary suite. A palette of navy, gold, and terracotta carries through the vintage-inspired rugs, layered bedding, and accessories, connecting the interiors to the warmth and charm of the cottage exterior and garden entry.

The result is an elevated but comfortable guest cottage that feels as though it has evolved over time. It gives friends and family a beautiful place to settle in, whether they’re visiting for the holidays or spending a weekend exploring Greenville, while feeling like a natural extension of the main residence. Old and new, personal and collected, Charleston and Continental all come together in a space that feels welcoming, lived-in, and completely at home.
